March 2024 Gathering

We will have a report on the success of this year’s Games as one of the main topics at a regular Society gathering to be held on Thursday 28 March at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix.

Those who come along will also be able to test their knowledge of the ‘old country’ in a specially devised Scottish quiz. Prizes will be on offer as an incentive to win, although of course it’s all about taking part.

Doors will be open at 6.30pm with the proceedings kicking off at 7pm. A licensed bar will be provided. Let’s aim for a good turnout.

St. Patrick's Day Parade

The Caledonian Society is marching at the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday 16 March. So come along, join in, and celebrate the special day of our Irish cousins.

We gather at 8:30am at the north-east corner of North 3rd Street and East Oak Street (near Monterrey Park) and the marchers then walk down Central Avenue to Hance Park and the Irish Cultural Center, where the St Patrick’s Day Faire will run from 10am to 5pm.

Dubbed the ‘Greenest Day in the Desert’, the Faire is a feast of Irish culture with good food and great music. It is always a colourful and fun affair. Free parking is available at 1850 N Central Avenue, and a free shuttle bus will take people to Hance Park for the Faire.

2024 Phoenix Scottish Games Report

2024 Games Closing

Another excellent Phoenix Scottish Games is safely in the bag. Thousands of visitors came along to Gilbert Regional Park on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to enjoy the music, dancing, heavy events, and everything else our annual festival has to offer.

Ingersoll Pipe Band

Among the highlights were the appearance of the Ingersoll Pipe Band from Canada; The Wicked Tinkers and many other musical acts at the Friday and Saturday night concerts; and the setting of a new world record by Stacey Marble in the Open Stone competition.

Well done to all the organizers. A full report on the success of the Games will be published in next month’s newsletter. In the meantime, here are some pictures to whet your appetite.

Recent Scottsdale Event

Scottish celebrity chef Coinneach MacLeod (aka The Hebridean Baker) and Outlander author Diana Gabaldon proved themselves to be a highly entertaining and informative double act when they appeared together in Scottsdale last month.

A good number of Society members turned up to see the pair, who through their work have both become icons in Scotland – Coinneach for bringing his unique style of Scottish island cuisine to life, and Diana for boosting Scottish tourism through her Outlander novels.

Coinneach, who told many amusing stories about his life in the west coast island of Lewis, was in Arizona as part of a tour to promote his latest book, The Hebridean Baker at Home.
